The Ghost of Vice President Wallace Warns: “It Can Happen Here” Thom Hartmann CommonDreams.org, July 19, 2004 With shouts of “foul” every time the name or image of Hitler is invoked in regards to current events, insights from FDR’s Vice President William Wallace cut through to the truth of pure fascism (“corporatism,” “a merger of corporate and state power,” it was dubbed by Mussolini’s scribe) and how indeed it can happen here: “The American fascist would prefer not to use violence. His method is to poison the channels of public information. With a fascist the problem is never how best to present the truth to the public but how best to use the news to deceive the public into giving the fascist and his group more money or more power.”

Unexpectedly relevant
Diverse political philosophies come together on the fact that Bush and the neocons have got it all wrong. You won't agree with everything they say, though.
The Bush Betrayal, Chapter 1 by James Bovard A libertarian who feels rightfully betrayed slams Bush for restricting liberties and expanding government. On-line excerpt from his book includes such gems as “For Bush, the right to rule apparently includes the right to lie. Bush has never shown a speck of contrition for his false prewar statements. Instead, he acts like a clumsy magician who assumes his audience is too feebleminded to recognize the elaborate trick that fell into pieces in front of their eyes.”
Righteous Anger: The Conservative Case against George W. Bush Doug Bandow The American Conservative, December 1, 2003 Wade through the conservatives’ obligatory and obsessive Bill Clinton “was properly impeached. He should have been removed from office” to find that they are truly p-o'ed about George W. Bush: “this president deserves to be criticized. Sharply. By anyone who believes in limited, constitutional government. . . .”
All right, it's a little off-subject but has timely applications: George McGovern Was Right Cal Thomas, townhall.com, November 21, 2001 Writing only 2 months after 9/11, the normally vitriolic and hard-line right-winger reveals his inner peace-&-love child, denouncing the Vietnam War as, basically, Lyndon B. Johnson’s personal ego trip and concluding that “Among the many lessons of Vietnam, which, as Beschloss notes, can teach us something about present and future conflicts, is that no president should have exclusive power when it comes to committing so many American lives and resources to a war. The Johnson tapes should also teach conservatives a lesson. Many anti-war activists love this country as much as those who supported the Vietnam War.” Is it a hallmark of dumb leaders and their dumb followers that the lessons of history aren't learned until it’s too late? If at all?
Americans Against Bombing / Americans Against World Empire Fabulous links and articles put together by ConservativesForPeace.com, “a Conservative/Libertarian coalition opposed to the bombing & hypocrisy, making enemies we ourselves create, turning our free Republic into a military empire. . . . This site is about the consequences of Washington's foreign policy, culminating in the 9/11 attack upon America. ‘Most Americans,’ as Joseph Sobran writes, ‘have no conception of the depth of hatred harbored against us, because of the (killing) inflicted by U.S. bombs and sanctions.’” Some of the topics include Armageddon Lobby—“trying to hurry up God” and an extensive look into Neo-Conservatives—What and Who They Are (“They can always be spotted by these seven features . . .”). Cato Institute Individual Liberty, Limited Government, Free Markets and Peace
“The Institute is named for Cato's Letters, a series of libertarian pamphlets that helped lay the philosophical foundation for the American Revolution. . . . the Institute strives to achieve greater involvement of the intelligent, concerned lay public in questions of policy and the proper role of government. . . . undertakes an extensive publications program dealing with the complete spectrum of public policy issues.
